Jason Whitlock, ESPN part ways

Another high profile sports commentator is out at ESPN, reports SI’s Richard Deitsch.

The network has bought out the contract of Jason Whitlock, who was recently demoted from his job as Editor-in-Chief.

ESPN’s statement:

“We have mutually agreed to part ways, which was Jason’s preference following the shift from his role as Editor-in-Chief. Jason is a talented print and television commentator, and we wish him success in his next chapter. ESPN remains fully committed to The Undefeated and plans continue toward an official launch.”

Whitlock lasted about two years in his second stint with ESPN and spearheaded a still not yet launched site originally called “The Black Grantland” and later renamed “The Undefeated.”

Jason was replaced as Editor-in-Chief in June by former New York Daily News sports editor Leon Carter, who at the time was ESPN’s New York editor.

Deitsch speculates Whitlock will likely rejoin Fox Sports.
