Johnny Manziel is a polarizing figure. He is the talk of the NFL and he hasn’t even taken a snap in the regular season. The former Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M is a special talent though. He launched himself into folk hero status when he had the single greatest offensive season in SEC history. He led his Aggies squad into defending national champion Alabama’s home stadium and upset the number one team in the nation. This was all as a freshman. His creativity in and out of the pocket and fearless approach at the quarterback position made him a darling. In the offseason following his Heisman campaign, he was everywhere. From partying with celebrities to hanging out courtside at the NBA Finals, Manziel was a bigger than life celebrity. Following an investigation by the NCAA and his on and off the field antics, Manziel was in storylines everywhere during his sophomore campaign. Now as a first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the nation’s most popular sporting league, Manziel is being dissected 24/7 and here are the reasons why people hate him:
1. He’s an elite talent
You don’t win the Heisman Trophy without being an elite talent. Manziel burst onto the scene as a freshman and was unstoppable in the SEC. When you are a really talented player though, there are always haters. Look at LeBron James. He is the best player in basketball and he has a big crowd of people who strongly dislike him.
2. On and off the field antics
Whether it’s the money sign he’s flashing or flipping off the sideline on the field or it’s the constant partying in Vegas off the field, he likes to have fun. That opens him up to criticism though and show’s he is immature.
3. He’s cocky
If you’re a good player, chances are you are going to be confident and somewhat cocky. Manziel is cocky. The way he carries himself on and off the field shows that and people don’t like cocky players. Instead, they prefer humble athletes like Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning.
4. He comes from a rich upbringing
Manziel comes from a very wealthy family who has ties to some Texas oil. He is seen as the spoiled rich kid and acts like it most of the time. No one likes the spoiled rich kid who flaunts it in everyone’s face.
5. People are jealous of his success
With fame comes jealousy. Manziel is one of the greatest college football players of all time and lives the life of a rock star off the field. People get jealous of others success.
6. He goes against the grain
He is not a straight-edge, by the books figure like a Peyton Manning. He is a cocky, full of attitude youngster who goes against the norm.
7. He’s the biggest story in sports
ESPN could be renamed the Manziel Network during training camp because he has been all over the headlines. When you’re the biggest name in the sport already and you haven’t even played in a regular season game, it rubs people the wrong way.
