Former NFL coach Tony Dungy spent all of Tuesday trying explain, and explain and explain away his comments on rookie Michael Sam.
“I wouldn’t have taken him,” Dungy told the Tampa Tribune on Monday. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.”
Those comments ignited a huge firestorm and backslash – comments Dungy will likely have to clarify over and over again for a while.
Sam, for his part, took the comments all in stride, joking with reporters Tuesday:
“Thank God he wasn’t St. Louis Rams’ coach,” Sam said laughing, via Dan Hanzus of NFL.com. “But I have a great respect for Dungy, and everyone in America is entitled to their own opinions.”
“I don’t really care what people are coming up and talking about,” Sam said. “My job is to make this team, that’s my number one priority.”
