Chael Sonnen appeared on FOX Sports 1’s “America’s Pregame” alongside UFC president Dana White to clear the air over his failed drug test that will keep him out of the UFC 175 lineup.
Sonnen is blaming the “transition period” after he was underwent testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT).
TRT has since been banned since February.
“This thing has been bad since Day One, I wish the commission never let anybody use TRT, and when it went away, they didn’t do a very good job of figuring out how to get these guys off it,” White said, via MMA Junkie/USA TODAY Sports. “When you get off it, you don’t just go cold turkey.”
“Look, they changed the rules, and I’ve got to comply with the rules,” Sonnen said. “I don’t resist that at all. However, there is a transition period, and I couldn’t have been more open or more transparent, whether it was ‘UFC Tonight,’ whether it was different interviews or different places. Anybody that I could tell that I could talk to about this, I did… And these are the medications that you have to go on to lead a healthy life, and if they’re asking me to choose between health and my sport, that’s not a choice I can make. I’ve got to choose health.”
