We were hoping San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner had a change of heart after realizing that “Hitner” is one letter away from Hitler, but apparently that’s not the case.
According to court records, via USA TODAY Sports, Whitner withdrew his application to change his last name to Hitner on Tuesday:
I had to withdraw the name change until after the season. Judge wouldn’t allow it without me being present…

Per USA TODAY: ‘One has to wonder if there wasn’t some buyer’s remorse. Once the change occurs, Whitner has to buy the remainder of his officially licensed jerseys. It’s a proposition he already considered — within reason, of course. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reported Oct. 2 that Whitner planned to talk with Nike.’
“He said there will be talks with Nike about their inventory of No. 31 uniforms with ‘Whitner’ on the back. He said he would be willing to pay for the soon-to-be-obsolete jerseys — ‘depending on how many there are.’”
