Tony Stewart had another surgery performed on the broken leg he suffered while driving a sprint car Monday night in Iowa, Stewart-Haas Racing said in a statement.
Stewart broke both his tibia and fibula in the crash and had immediate surgery early Tuesday to stabilize and clean the injury. Thursday’s procedure inserted a metal rod inside the tibia, which was performed by a specialist in North Carolina.
Via USA TODAY Sports: ‘ It will be the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race without Stewart since 1998. Stewart had a streak of 521 consecutive races — third most among active drivers — dating to his rookie season in 1999. Jeff Gordon leads active drivers with 710 consecutive starts, followed by Jeff Burton at 613. ‘
