Ottawa Senators defenseman Eric Gryba delivered a huge check to Canadiens forward Lars Eller Thursday night that left him bleeding profusely with head and facial injuries.
“Lars Eller suffered a head and facial injury,” the team said in a statement. “He is conscious and alert. He has been taken to the hospital for further examination and will remain under observation.”
We’re all pretty sure Gryba will be hearing from the NHL about this one. After the hit, he was given an interference major and ejected. Canadian network RDS reports (via USA Today) that Gryba will have a hearing at noon on Friday.
“I stepped up to make a hit and I kept my shoulder down,” Gryba told the Ottawa Sun. “He received the puck by the time I hit him, I saw on the replay,” he said. “My elbow was down and there was no intent to hurt him whatsoever. I hope he is going to be OK.
“I’m not out here to hurt anybody and it’s never a good scene or anything like that. Hopefully he has a full and speedy recovery.”
