Renaldo Balkman banned for life in Philippines after choking teammate

Renaldo BalkmanThe Philippine Basketball Association handed down a stiff penatly to crazy ole former NBA player Renaldo Balkman.

PBA commissioner Chito Salud fined him the staggering amount of 250,000 Philippine Pesos (ok, that’s only about $6,150 U.S. dollars, but a lot nevertheless) and banned him from the league FOR LIFE.

Balkman went nuts after a ref’s call as his teammates tried to restrain him. One of them, Arwind Santos, got shoved and then choked by Balkman.

So with that, the mighty Petron Blaze Boosters will have to go the rest of the way without the NBA has-been.

Salud’s statement, via Yahoo! Sports: “In arriving at this decision, I took into consideration Balkman’s track record as a player, including the head-butting incident during a FIBA-Americas game between Puerto Rico and Venezuela and his altercation with the bench of the Alaska Aces during a pre-Season game in Cebu City. I also took into consideration Balkman’s evident disregard for local and the host country’s sensibilities highlighted by his choking act on-court in full public view of his own teammate who was trying to pacify him. Stiff as it maybe, this decision upholds the tenets of contextual accountability and the over-all interest of the League and the fans.”
