Giants manager Bruce Bochy cuts his son over dinner

Brett and Bruce Bochy

No, no, perhaps that title doesn’t quite describe the story, Bochy didn’t physically pick up a knife or some sharp object and assault his son because the potatoes were cold or anything, he simply broke the news to his son Brett, who pitches for the team, that he’s being released by the Giants, along with 20 other players, writes John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

But he gave him the special treatment, preferring to tell him over dinner rather than calling him into the office as he did with the others.

“He was disappointed I didn’t bring him in to cut him,” said Bruce Bochy, “I may do it tomorrow just to make him feel better.”

To be honest, the younger Bochy didn’t have a chance of sticking around away, so it wasn’t really much of a surprise.

Per the Chronicle:

Brett Bochy, 25, surrendered two runs in 2 2/3 innings over three  appearances. Last year at Double-A  Richmond, he was 6-3 with a 2.53 ERA and 14 saves. He appears destined for  Triple-A Fresno.

“He’s worked hard to get here to this point,” Bochy the elder said, “and I  was very proud of him.” The Giants cut 21 players, and the manager said most of them knew what  was coming.

“When it’s meal money day,” he said, “they figure it out.” ‘
